Visiting South Dakota

Here we are going to look at a few places to stop at during your South Dakota road trip. You will find awesome national parks, national treasures, and even a few quirky places to do a little souvenir shopping.

01 Deadwood

Deadwood is an old town that still has much of its western style still featured. The town has a history that includes the gold rush era. The cemetery also holds some famous Wild West people such as Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok. Deadwood is a very charming town that has great places to eat and spend a night or two. The shops are mostly boutiques that will offer great unique souvenir options.

02 Custer State Park

Custer State Park is a dreamy national park where you can enjoy a few hours of horse riding, hiking, or biking while taking in the beautiful pine air. Other attractions include swimming and fishing or simply having a lovely picnic and enjoying the abundant wildlife the park offers. The Blue Bell Lodge will be a delightful choice to book in for a night’s stay and then head over to  Mt. Rushmore Brewing Company and Pounding Fathers Restaurant for dinner.

03 Badlands National Park

Continue your adventure into the natural beauty of South Dakota at the Badlands National Park. The landscape is filled with rocky formations holding magnificent spirals and steep canyons. The views over each of the trails is breathtaking. Highway 240 winds through the Park and has many lookout points to take it all in from different viewpoints. The Fossil Exhibit Trail is a definite stop where you walk past the uncovered fossils in the park. The Cedar Pass Lodge has brilliant cabins that make a great stay for two nights where you can watch the sunset.

04 Wall Drug Store

Wall Drug Store is located close to Badlands National Park and has become a popular roadside attraction. One of the quirks here is the offer of free ice water to travelers coming through. The other things include shops and dinosaur statues. Here you can find some of the best souvenirs and enjoy a little cultural history of the area.

05 Sioux Falls

Sioux Falls is a city in South Dakota known for the Big Sioux River tumbles over a series of rock faces in Falls Park. Here you can see the observation tower and the ruins of the 19th century Queen Bee Mill. After a visit to Falls Park and perhaps the museum you can select one of the many establishments for a night or two. There are also a few interesting restaurants and bars for fun dining.
